The Chicago Irish Immigrant Support Group is a 501c3 not for profit organization established in 1998 in association with the Irish Bishops and the Archdiocese of Chicago to serve the needs of Chicago's Irish immigrant population. The center began by primarily serving the needs of young immigrants arriving from Ireland but its mission has expanded over the years to include immigration and naturalization assistance, seniors' services and an array of social services. The organization works closely with the Consulate General of Ireland in Chicago and is responsible for services spanning over 20 states all the way to Texas.

Michael Cooney is a highly respected, immensely talented and accomplished uilleann piper with a great reputation in the world of uilleann piping and in traditional music circles. He has acquired a great store of tunes and ability to play them all at the highest level; in addition, he has many fine settings of tunes, common and rare alike. It is a rare treat to have him here to share his gift; Michael does not pass through Chicago very often so piping fans, tradheads, and anyone curious to see and hear the pipes in full flight in person alike are strongly encouraged to come out for what will be a night of beautiful music and great craic.
This concert is the latest installment of a series of Fall 2011 uilleann piping events at the IAHC. It is made possible through the collaboration of the Irish American Heritage Center and its Cultural Committee and the Chicago Pipers. The season commenced with the International Uilleann Piping Day event on October 15, which was part of a worldwide celebration of the pipes which took place in 20 different locations on all 6 of the world’s habitable continents. The series also saw a special visit by former Bothy Band member and piping legend Paddy Keenan, who gave a workshop for members of the Chicago Pipers in early November.
Michael Cooney is a highly regarded piper from Gortnahoe, County Tipperary who has made his home in the United States for many years now. He grew up in a family of Highland pipers and started playing Irish music on the tin whistle at a young age. His father, Martin, was eager to expose him to as much music as possible and supported his son’s growing interest in music by driving him to concerts, workshops, and festivals all over Ireland. Michael progressed to the uilleann pipes in his teens, but there being no pipers around to provide any tuition, Michael instead learned his music from a number of extremely fine fiddle and accordion players who lived within a short driving distance. He improved his piping technique through careful study of his father’s tapes of piping legends like Leo Rowsome, Seamus Ennis, Johnny and Felix Doran, Willie Clancy, and Patsy Touhey.
Michael began touring and performing as a young man and soon moved to the US, splitting time between New York and Saint Louis. He appeared on a recording with accordion player Joe Burke and singer/guitarist/bouzouki player Terry Corcoran, “Happy to Meet and Sorry to Part” in the late 1980s and already he showed enviable mastery of his instrument and of the tunes ��" clean, respectful, lyrical, yet tough and highly danceable playing.
Since then he has released two solo CDs, “A Stone’s Throw” in 1999 and the self-effacingly titled “Just Piping” in 2010. Both were released to acclaim by the traditional music and piping worlds. “A Stone’s Throw” contains many “modern” elements such as guitar accompaniment, fusion with other traditions and unorthodox instrumentation, and synth washes on certain tracks, but the overall program is still about the pipes and Michael’s impeccable chanter playing. It contains a number of stirring performances, including a recording of the reels “O’Connell’s Trip to Parliament,” and “Micho Russell’s.” “Just Piping, ” released in 2010, is a purely solo effort in the spirit of the great classic solo recordings by Patsy Touhy, Leo Rowsome, Seamus Ennis, and Willie Clancy. It contains mature piping of a standard not heard very often in recent years; clear, unhurried, expressive music that is much, much more than the sum of its parts.
Michael’s piping features strong, rhythmic chanter playing, clean articulations, and eloquent phrasing interspersed with many subtle variations. Much of his art lies in revealing only glimpses of his true technical prowess; rather than going for flashy effects, he draws the listener into the tune, sharing its innate beauty and grace without ego or ostentation.
Pat Egan is a fine guitar accompanist who made a name for himself as member of the band Chulrua. He also has performed as an accompanist to Patrick Ourceau, John Skelton, Tim Britton, and others. He has a driving, rhythmic guitar style that strengthens and supports the inherent rhythms in Irish tunes, and uses chord choices that help “translate” the pure, stark beauty of the tunes for modern ears more used to harmony and percussive accompaniment. This is very demanding for the guitarist, for it requires a complete understanding of the modal harmony and rhythmic possibilities within any given performance of Irish tune and the ability to put hat knowledge into execution at full speed and without much thinking about it at all ��" and all the while watching the melody player intently for signals or variations. It is much, much, harder than it looks, especially when Pat makes it look so easy.

Sunday's theme showcases some of Chicago's traditional music families. Family connections have played an enormous and vital role in the passing on of traditional music, and continue to do so. Father to son, mother to daughter, sibling to sibling, cousin to cousin, these ties in a musical family provide the possibility for deep immersion in traditional music making as a worthwhile and fun activity from a young age.

These are all folks steeped in the music, Offaly and Clare are represented here on this day!

Please come support this event, there is a lot going on and lots of great opportunities to learn more about Irish culture in depth. We will be also here on this day adding our little piece with traditional tunes on the pipes and fiddle.

"The International Day of Uilleann Piping Tionol and Concert" October 15, 2011 at the Irish American Heritage Center.

This is an all-day event and is part of the Dublin Pipers' Club International Day of Uilleann Piping. The International Day of Uilleann Piping is intended to raise global awareness of this unique instrument and raise funds to support a new training facility for uilleann pipemakers called PipeCraft.

The Tionol (tchuh NOLL) part of the event will consist of daytime workshops on piping technique, reedmaking, and maintenance and is open to pipers of any skill level. Schedule and registration details are forthcoming.

The Concert will be 7PM Saturday evening and is open to the public. The concert will feature Tommy Martin, a highly accomplished and respected piper and pipemaker from Dublin.

The IAHC Museum features a photography exhibit that will run this spring, The Photography of D. James Galbraith.

The D.James Galbraith Exhibit opens on Friday, March 4 with a 6pm joint reception for The Old Neighborhood exhibit.

The photographs in the exhibit at the IAHC Museum belong to the Slainte portfolio and were taken on Galbraith’s multiple visits to Ireland. They capture various aspects of Irish life that changed dramatically during a period spanning almost thirty years. In particular, the photographs provide insights into daily life in rural areas as well as in small towns and villages in Cork, Kerry and Clare. The exhibit includes photographs of well-known traditional musicians Micho and Gussie Russell pictured at home as well as performing in O'Connor's pub, Doolin, County Clare.

We will be there playing the music of Clare, Kerry and Cork for the Reception.

Ownership cred: Irish-born Garrett Diamond (from Drogheda) and Conor Kelly (from Skerries) met while working at Four Farthings; a minority owner still lives in Ireland.
